Presentation 48

Let's come to the near the close of this year of 2015, a year of preparation for 2016. And this is the 48th out of the 52 presentations. So we're coming very close. What we're looking at here is a peculiarity that is immediate in our time, which is November 28, 2015, and the world is declaring war on ices. As a regression back to barbarity and savagery, actually. It's interesting because Icis is also. The oldest ongoing history of science journal. It was founded over 100 years ago by George Sartin, who originally was from the Netherlands and came to the United States and set up the history of science society that made Icis as a journal. And it's still published and it is still published by the University of Chicago Press. This is the latest issue and it has icis on the cover with the name in Lavender Royal Purple. And it's a way of reminding everyone in this planetary community of not only science, but history that the two go together. And so a history of science society is planetary and has been now for more than 100 years. What is interesting also is the way in which the obfuscation of the classical ices. Took place in the 20th century progressively and right at the beginning of the 20th century. What came into play about 1900 was a sense that somehow there was going to be a rearrangement, as it were, of the power structure of the way in which history would unfold. And one of the most peculiar. Aspects of it came out in the early 1960s, again from the University of Chicago Press. And the book that was published in 1962, Education and the Cult of Efficiency. Raymond E Callahan A study of the social forces that have shaped the administration of the public schools. And this was a very famous book. For those of us who were struggling with not just education, but what is better styled as learning. And in his preface, Callahan relates, When I began the study, some five years ago, 1957, and the reason why he began it in 1957, for those of us who remember very well, and October four, 1957, the sudden news of Sputnik was on every front page in the world. Russian satellite orbiting Earth. And that was a colossal event. And many people were spurred at that moment, at that time, to try to appreciate that the moment had come when the reach and the power of man's hand was going off planet off world. And had done so in unmistakable terms. Beep, beep, beep, beep, beep, beep. Around the world and just hours. Two of the huge responses to this were books, one by Hannah Arendt, who was so steeped in the great philosophy of civilisation. She had studied as a young girl beginning in college under Martin Heidegger. And then she had studied as a more mature yet young woman under Karl Jaspers and who had been forced to move out of her native Germany because she was Jewish into France, where she began to understand that she was responsible as a member of her generation of having this tremendous education and background, but that she was going to utilize it to help people against the in compassing crowding apocalyptic events that unfolded with not only the Nazis but unfolded in Italy with Mussolini, unfolded in Japan with the militarization and of the industrial complex. And she wrote a book called The Human Condition, published by the University of Chicago Press. And Callahan wrote The Cult of Efficiency Education and the Cult of efficiency, both from the same event from Sputnik, both about the same time. He writes in the preface. When I began the study some five years ago, my intent was to explore the origin and development of the adoption of business values and practices in educational administration. My investigation revealed that this adoption had started about 1900 and had reached the point by 1930 that, among other things, school administrators perceived themselves as business managers or, as they would say, school executives, rather than as scholars and educational philosophers. The question, which now became significant was why had school administrators adopted business values and practices and assumed the posture of the business executive? Education is not a business. Seemingly had never been a business seemingly. The school is not a factory. It doesn't produce. Henry Ford type assembly lines or does it? Of course, by 1910, the scale of operations in both business and education in the large cities had produced large organizations. And so it was reasonable, even legitimate, to expect the borrowing of ideas and techniques from one set of institutions to another. But the evidence indicated that the extent of the borrowing had been too great for such an explanation to be adequate. I had felt that the adoption of business values and practices might be explained simply by the process of cultural diffusion in which the flow of ideas and values is generally from high status or power groups. But Bryce James Bryce, a great historian of the twenties of the First World War. And after Bryce pointed out, business was king in American society. King And certainly between 1910 and 1929, if not down to the present time, 1962, the business and industrial group had had top status and power in America. But it still didn't explain in a crucial way why it had not only enveloped, but had been embraced enveloping. The strength of business, ideology and the American culture on the one hand, and the extreme weakness and vulnerability of school men, especially school administrators on the other. It wasn't just that a power group, which is always operative, especially powered and empowered when the facility of language is multiplied by civilization. In cultures, no matter how long cultures have been operative, much more than 100,000 years, it has always been an oral language. Until a little more than about 6000 years ago, when civilization a completely different dimension of society, it has nothing to do with simply tradition or custom or tribes, or the complex of tribes making a culture, or even of several or more cultures weaving and intertwining together. Civilization is based on written language. The power of written language is that it is able to leap frog over any pauses in custom, any hiatuses in tradition, any change of the cultural mix, and sustain an over reaching order that is able to accrue power for itself continuously. So that civilization is extremely powerful, not just a mega culture, but a completely different way of having a social order. And that social order has an idea that is there at the beginning and innocently grows into its strength of maturing. And that is that whatever the world is can be ordered as a world social order. The travesty of the First World War was a clash of traditions, a clash of customs, a class of cultures. Within a very powerful reach of civilization. That had by then over a century. Of increased production and facility of manufacture and thus of business. Of the Industrial Revolution. It isn't that a gun is going to kill a lot of people unless you have a lot of people with guns. But when you have a gun that is repeating like a Gatling gun, like a machine gun. A machine gun. One can kill a lot of people quickly. And with the increase then of bombs that don't just go off where they are, but can be lobbed and lobbed and lobbed. There are naval cannons now that can throw a lob over 100 miles of a nuclear weapon from a rowboat. So what has occurred is an atrophying of learning that is gobbled up as fast as it atrophies by a world social order. But there are competitors for this world social order down to just a few. Just a handful. A single poker game. Even closer. Because the entire world now has undergone transformations of written language over the 6000 years, it is now achieved a digitisation of language that is almost instant worldwide. At the same time, the accumulated atrophying of learning has produced already two generations of persons who are illiterate as to learning itself. Are oblivious to what they consider to be the past dead past that if you're not in the action, your history. And it only takes a little while of that for that atrophy, that dismissal of history especially. To affect science so that science instead of being science. Becomes indexed by its productivity as technology, and that that technology becomes feasible as a vehicle of expressing the new world order. With the concomitant of a constant railing against it by an opposition group so that you have a polarity, which is the essence of an exciting game. In the closing years of the Second World War. Several incredible events occurred. One of them was concomitant with the development of something that was a genius idea that Vannevar Bush had in the Second World War, that mathematics, in order to be computationally effective, needed to be able to streamline and to condense its ability to analyze. Arithmetic is about counting. But mathematics is about computing. And Vannevar Bush, designed in the Second World War what he called a differential analyzer that you could calibrate long range odds of gears within gears on an enormous table of such an apparatus. And one could feed the digitized question into a digital analyzer and can completely compute very quickly something that would have taken tables and tables of individuals. Not just the touring machine of popular renown now. But in comes a genius as well. John von Neumann, who was an expert not only in the engineering of the differential analyzer, but who was a magisterial in terms of being able to understand and wrote a book published by Princeton in 1946. The Theory of Games. That applied especially to economics, the money, the power, the business, the industry, but also applied to social order and wed the two so that his development of the differential analyser leapt because it began to show that mechanical computing was too slow by many orders. So it had to be wedded to electricity. And the world's first electric computer was ENIAC e for energy. And very quickly within a generation. You had the development of computers that has not only doubled like Moore's Law every little increment of time, but has exceeded all bounds of what used to be reasonableness. At the same time, learning has atrophied to the point where no one knows what happened at all or cares, and science has become largely bogus and manipulated. But the atrophy is not in the history, in the science. The atrophy is in the fragmentation of the arts and in the atrophying of vision so that all of the dimensions and the whole ecology of consciousness. Our innovated to the point of not only being crippled, but of being considered dead. There is no exemplar of this greater than the current almost total ignorance, almost abject understanding of the Holy Family. Of Christian origins. In 1950, almost like an echo of something that happened some 1500 years before. In 431, the third Ecumenical Council of the Christian Powerhouse Church Industrialists had a council in ancient Ephesus. And decided that the word for the Virgin Mary was Theotokos. She was the mother of God. And that became the lynchpin of the power of doctrine at the time. In 1950, the Vatican issued a papal papal encyclical on the assumption of the Virgin Mary that she had always been God. She was divine all the time. One of the few psychologists of the time who pointed out the absolute inanity of this was Carl Jung. We're going to talk about the Holy Family in terms of history and wisdom for a little bit. But we're going to take a short break before we choose that. Not to calm down or backtrack. But the 1960s that began with Hannah Arendt's, the human condition was 1958 and 1962. Callahan's education and the cult of efficiency bore fruit towards the end of the 1960s with one of the most powerful of all of the figures of American business. And his name is Simon Ramo. Simon Ramo used his initial R to pair with two other powerful industrialists, and their initials were TRW. T. R. W. Became one of the most powerful of all of the corporations here in Southern California. Here in larger la la land. I had a long time student who, when I first met him, was a computing genius for Candle Corp. in Santa monica. And over the years, the genius of his family, his older sister was the head programmer for the Apollo program to send men to the moon. And Tony, even more brilliant than his sister. And about ten, 12, 15 years ago, he had become a super consultant for computer firms and he was contacted by then TRW and enormously powerful. But they discovered that there were crumbling things going on within their very sophisticated systems because something endemic had never been tended to properly. And so they hired Tony. Because he was one of the few people alive who had lived through all the various computer generations. And he was able to do an archaeology of the massive computing network of TRW and go back to its beginnings and define that it was irrational in so many ways that were not only fundamental, but that they were crucial because there had been almost no learning for those who had patched it together, thinking that a pastiche with enough power is going to stay there. It doesn't. And in time in complexity, it self sabotages everything that has been developed because it's not organic, nor is it scientific because it's not scientific because its history is nonexistent and corrupted. And the vision was never learned. And so one was left with an integral only mentality, thinking that its completeness is completeness and doesn't understand that there are whole dimensions of the universe beyond the completeness of four dimensions. And that the cosmos opens out as easily into infinities as nature does in its mystery to a zero field. Ramos of 1969 book Cure for Chaos. The Technological Society. Century of Mismatch How Logical Man Can Reshape His Illogical Technology. Technological Society. I was a young professor in those days. I remember well the first question that was asked, if you went to apply for a teaching position anywhere. Are you familiar with the systems approach? You have to marginalize instruction in order to optimize the system, because then you can utilize the technology and help us out for a while. As long as you behave. In 1971. Down in Karnataka, Mexico, which was a center of expat geniuses like Eric from great psychologist was Ivan Ilic and his 1971 book. Schooling Society. And it goes on, see, and Yang, so forth. So in 69, 70, 71, with a pivot on 1970. There was a glomming reach of systems theory power to seize control and fortify that into a new world order. That's the time I started teaching in Canada. Let's take a little break and we will come back to the Holy Family. Let's come back with just a brief reminder. A nightcap. The International Journal of Science Nature has editorial pages, just a single page every week and has done for over 130 years like Ices been around for a very long time. This is a worldview, a personal take on events. Editorial Page 19th of November 2015 Volume 527 Nature. Page 277 The author here, Colin McIlwaine, is at Edinburgh, Edinburgh and the UK in Scotland and it's called Time to Cry Out for Academic Freedom. Giving staff and students a say in how institutions are run would strengthen governance and clip the wings of administrators. And it begins with a simple sentence or so. It was Clark Kerr, k e r, a former chancellor of the University of California, Berkeley, who most memorably defined the role of a university administrator to arrange parking for the staff, sex for the students and sports for the alumni. I was there. Remember events like. Being in a small, hearty crowd on the steps of Sproul Hall in Berkeley in a driving rain, and the Speaker bareheaded was Norman Mailer. Talking about Lyndon Johnson. Talking about the expansion of the Vietnam War yet again. Etc.. No university in the world offers a course. On the Holy Family. No university in the world has ever offered a course on the Holy Family. For a family whose matriarchal mother is the mother of God by council. 1500 years ago. Or as Devine herself. Some two thirds of a century ago. Robbed of her humanity. Robbed of her femininity. Needs to be restored. And here's a little bit of that restoration. Let's use a Inchon landing technique. A Normandy D-Day technique. Let's land at the beaches. Herod Antipas, a contemporary of Jesus Christ Herald W ho Nir. And this came out fairly recently published by Cambridge in Cambridge in 1972. So Simon Rameau, Cure for Chaos 1969 on the Systems Approach 1970 Ivan Lage to Schooling D Schooling Society 1971 and Herod Antipas a contemporary of Jesus Christ, 1972. And so one is beginning to see that the composition here, though creative, is not arbitrary, has a design, has a pattern. Has dimensions of consciousness. That include the field division. The aesthetics of the prismatic person in art, the kaleidoscopic flows of the dimensions of history and of science that opens into the real cosmos. And the operative universe. Worlds without end. When, Mary. Was married at 16. Her husband was one of the great dream masters alive, and his name was Yes, indeed, Joseph. Joseph was born 32 B.C., the year before the great Battle of Actium, where Augustus Caesar demolished the naval engagement with Cleopatra and Mark Anthony and their powerful Navy, and drove Antony and Cleopatra back to Alexandria. And the relentless pursuit of them. And when Joseph was about a year old, all of this was transpiring. And it was hardly. Possible to foresee and understand. That when Joseph would marry Mary, who was about five years younger than him. He had a vision that she was sacred in the sense of being holy with a presence. And did not consummate the marriage right away. But in his sleep he had a dream that that presence had the benefit of reality, for life and for love. And woke and took her for his wife was with her for their marriage. When she was three months pregnant. Probably 16 and a half. She went to stay with a relative of hers who was the sister of her mother, who is pregnant in old age, just as she was pregnant in young age, expected young age. And that. And Elizabeth. Was. Pregnant with John the Baptist was about six months older than Jesus. It was Joseph who had the vision that his name should be Jesus. In Bethlehem at the census focus. Joseph and his wife Mary, and the birthing at that time of Jesus was because of the location of the way in which the tribal histories had come down from the time of Moses and Joshua. Meanwhile, far off in that world. The very pattern of stars, the constellations and the movements and the patterns that have been known for a couple of thousand years. Those who were much later from the origins were called Zoroastrians Star Gazers. But Zoroaster was a renaissance revival in Iran of a figure who was from about 1500 years before that, about 2000 B.C., born in Central Asia, near what classically with Samarkand, and his name was Zarathustra. In the ancient divested language, it was Zarathustra. Good with managing camels, meaning that he was born into a family that had very long caravan routes with camels. He was born almost contemporaneously with Abraham. And just as when Abraham was 75, he had a vision, not just a great dream vision, but a conscious vision of a promised land that he must go to, to find to recognize when he was there and assembled some relatives and his flocks and his people. And about the same time, Zarathustra At about 75, I'm now 75 myself understood that. The Central Asian caravans were a part of a very large swath and one of the side caravan routes went south and there was a kingdom located at what is today the city of Kabul in Afghanistan, on the way which extended then through the Khyber Pass and to Northwest Classical India at that time the Indus civilization. It was very advanced urban area. And he wrote his gossips visionary in Kabul. About the same time that Abraham was establishing the Promised Land, in particular founded where Hebron is just outside of it, in a grove that had a very large oak native oak mammary, and the oak of mammary was the pivotal place that Abraham had his visions at the same time that Zarathustra was having his visions in Kabul, that in our time Iran and Israel should be terminal, apocalyptic sworn enemies on atomic obliteration is an indication of how atrophied wisdom has become and how insane. Tower technology has matched it. The descendants of Sderot ultras, refinement of an ancient facility of keeping track of stars because the long Central Asian caravans traveled mainly by checking their progress and position at night through the stars. So by the time of Jesus's birth in Bethlehem, the Magi, who were masterful at this, had three wise men from the East who were the emissaries of this visioning acumen to come to honor the birth of a world. Wisdom figure. A babe. An infant. They went to Jerusalem, to the seat of the power nearby to see where to limit their search, because they were within literally within about less than ten miles, somewhere around seven miles. The ruler at the time, Herod the Great, decaying in his own sanity. Where power and disease and fears of being sabotaged or usurped had led him even to kill, to have murdered his two oldest sons. And when the three Magi had caught with him saying, We have traveled all this way and the stars have shown us that a great king has been born the king of the world and we wish to honor. If we've come this far. What do your sages say is the record? And they sages, after searching through the scriptures, came up with a quotation saying that it's in Bethlehem. That's what they arcane refinement shows us to say, that Scripture says he'll be born in Bethlehem. And so they took the night road following the stars from Jerusalem south, the few miles. And when they got to Rachel's well outside of Bethlehem, Rachel's a revered wife of Jacob, who had fostered a nother Joseph a long time ago. They had a clear visioning all three of where in Bethlehem to go. And it was not in the central part of Bethlehem, but on the outskirts somewhat. And there and as the gospel says, all the inns were crowded because of the census and registration. And so the birth took place in a manger. And they brought three gifts. Which were not just honorary gifts, that they were life sustaining gift things. The frankincense and myrrh were from very far southern. Arabian Peninsula from what is today? Yemen. And that frankincense and myrrh were not just that they were incenses and medicinal aspects. But that they were very valuable and portable. And the third gift, gold also packing a lot of value in something that's portable. So that the three gifts of the three Magi were gifts to sustain an exile life for many years, as many years as it would take. They were Iranian. And so it's three learned Iranians who financed the protection from the Jewish powers. For the Holy Family to go into Egypt for security, to save themselves. And just in time it's recorded that all of the infants and that entire area were killed in a single night on Order of Herod the Great in his insanity, decayed madness. There's no limit to an apocalyptic insanity. It devolves into universal death without batting an eye. That's the hell of it. They spent five years in Alexandria. They were received in Alexandria because arrangements had been made. And the Magi not just leaving, but went with them to help not only guard, but and to guide, but also to sustain the visioning that they and Joseph together were doing to form that kind of for for protectiveness for the mother and the infant. And in that five years. The learning of the great world city because Alexandria was never made for just a kingdom. It was made for an ecumenical for a one world population of people designed by the great visioning of Alexander the Great and posited and built to be the great city that would sustain us throughout history. During that time. Other children were born to marry. The first born after Jesus was a girl and she was named Salome. And the second that was born was named Jo Anna. Mary's mother was named Hannah. Hannah. Hannah. And so Hannah was a family name in the matriarchy. And just as the second child was the first girl, Salome, being a part of Alexandria and the third child, the second girl named Joanna was also born there about the time that they were going to leave Alexandria and go back to. Today because her dad died and the fourth child was a third girl named Suzanna. So that on which is one of the most ancient feminine names, is considerably in presence all the way down through thousands of years of history. The first. Son. The first male child, was named Joseph for Joseph. And the fourth girl child. Later on, the fourth sister was named Mary. There were four sisters, and it turns out that there were four brothers as well. There was Joseph. There was a James often called James. The just there was a Simon and there was a Jude. So there were four brothers and four sisters with Jesus making nine children for Mary and for Joseph. Each of the sisters married a very special man. Salomé, who was the first who received an incredible education in Alexandria, even as a little child, a little girl. And in that time, Joseph, the father, had become immensely educated himself, not only in the traditional scriptures, but also in the development of an Alexandria scale of learning. Salomé married a man named Zebedee, and Zebedee was the third son of a very prominent family. The oldest son of that family was named Alpheus. He was the A just as the second son was Arista Bulls, another A, But Zebedee, when he came in, had not only to be the Z, but because the father of those three was named Zebedee and it was time for there to be another Zebedee. The father of that first Zebedee was named John. So that seventies grandfather John was extremely important to Zebulon. His wife, Salomé. But the first importance was the birth of James after a Joseph after Jesus. And so the first son of Salome and Zebedee was called James. And the mother, Salome, took great care to make sure that he had what we would call and still do call a world class education. He was learned in the kind of languages that were learned not only Hebrew, but Greek as well as some Latin, but the emphasis was on the Greek and the Hebrew together. Zebedee is oldest brother, Alpheus. Whereas the father of two apostles, the oldest, was named Levi because they were Levites. Jesus gave him the name Matthew Grace of God. And the younger brother was another James often called James the lesser. The only niece of Jesus was the oldest daughter of Susanna, who married Joseph of Arimathea, who ran a huge shipping route all the way to Britain, to the west of Britain. He imported tin and led silver and so forth. And their oldest daughter. Their first daughter, their only daughter was named Anna. And Anna, being the only carrier of the Holy Family, mitochondrial Rrna was to be the mother of kings in Britain. A long time ago. 1950 years ago. The fourth sister had a single child, Mary. Her husband was Clios, whose family ran trading shipping business from Paphos on Cyprus to Antioch down to Tyre, down to where Haifa is today and on to Alexandria. And that shipping route was very close to another shipping route that went from Tyre to Alexandria. And that family, the Skye end of that shipping family was named Simon who came down with leprosy. And the family business had to be passed to his son, Lazarus. And his oldest daughter, Martha, had to oversee the moving of the house hold from the Sea of Galilee off to be outside where Simon, the leper, now had to be incarcerated in the Valley of the Lepers. And that community was on the road from Jerusalem all the way down to the Jordan River. And that community was called Bethany. And so the household was moved to Bethany from Magdala and Martha and her mother oversaw the carrying of foodstuffs to lower down in a basket to the valley of lepers. If you've seen Ben-Hur, it's that kind of a procedure as featured there. But the youngest daughter, Mary, Mary of Magdala, Mary Magdalene, was put under the care of her brother Lazarus and TYA. And because the family also was responsive not only to Alexandria and Tyre, but to shipping routes all the way through the eastern Mediterranean, she was gifted with one of the best educations you could have. She learned drawing. She learned writing in many languages. She could write in Hebrew, in Syriac, especially in Greek. She eschewed writing in Latin, which she knew, or Aramaic, which she knew. It is there. That the interesting aspect comes into play. That toward the apex of Jesus's the living Jesus life story. Have returning from Alexandria to they couldn't return to Judea so much. So they returned to Galilee because Herod Antipas was rebuilding the capital of his dual kingdom. He had the provinces of Galilee and of Perea, and in between them was a little area called Palace of ten Cities. They were independent, but the administration of his kingdom was in Zephyrus and he was rebuilding it because Father Herod, the Great, had rebuilt many things and they had great need for architects and for carpenters and for glass makers, for tile makers and so forth. And so Joseph moved his family outside of Cyprus to a craft community where he, as an architect, not just a carpenter, was in charge of designing buildings as well as the material for buildings. And very close to that crossroads it's referred to as Nazareth because of the ancient valves. The right someone who is dedicated to God in the mother's womb and as a right would be John the Baptist. Another Nazareth would be Jesus. And related to that particular crafts architectural community was one on the slopes on the other side of the rebuilding of the capital seafarers. And that was Canaan, and Cana was where the glass makers and tile makers were. We know this because where Zebedee and his brothers Aristo Bolas and Alpheus had their family home within Capernaum on the Dead Sea and on the Sea of Galilee. And it was there that next to their family is house rather large villa with a courtyard in between that was garden was the synagogue and Capernaum, and it's still there today. You can visit it. Any guide in the world will tell you. One of the great windows that was salvaged from that original synagogue has inscriptions that is donated by Zebedee, a son of Zebedee, son of John. And the house was owned by Arista Bullis, who had a daughter who married a fisherman named Peter. And Peter and his young wife moved in to that house with. The mother and. Eventually the young wife died, leaving Peter embittered about women and life. And reverted back to a kind of a rough, tumble fisherman. With deep questioning about what does it all mean? What's it all for? Joanna. Married chooser in sufferers and chooser was the He was called in Greek. The Epic Tropics. The epic tropics of King Herod Antipas meant that he managed all of the finances, all of the estates of King Herod Antipas. Very powerful man. They had a son. Named Mané in May and a. And in the inscriptions. Concerning Herod Antipas choose as the epitaphs is singled out and the son Mannan as the son propose. Interesting that play because it means someone who is educated personally in the palace of the King. Later. It was one of the founders of the Antioch followers of the way. And we'll talk more next week about how all of this came into play in such a way. That it is possible now to revision the Holy Family. And to bring that history back to life next week.
