Roman Alexandria: From Augustus to Hypatia
Single presentation
Saturday, Mar 12, 1983
This sequel to Mr. Weir's lecture of last July on Ptolemaic Alexandria covers over four centuries of history. Neoplatonism, Christianity, Judaism, the cult of Serapis, and revivals of ancient Egyptian Mystery Schools abounded in this classic city. Philo, Ammonius Saccas, Plotinus, Clement of Alexandria, Origen, and scores of other exotic spirits populate the cityscape. Lecture, slides, and displays of rare PRS antiquities will amplify the subject.
